Timber Preservatives

You may think that all the timber preservatives are all the same apart from the colours they have.  There are a lot of preservatives on the market that are only good enough for fences etc.  The different types of preservatives are listed below;

Water Based Preservatives:
These are water based preservatives and will just create a skin on the surface of the timber.  This then peels off when the sun heats the timbers and therefore leads to exposed timber to damp.  Be aware when the tin says Shed & Fencing Preserver (however Cuprinols Shed & Fencing Preserver is good as it is spirit based)

Becasue all our timber have a smooth planned finish, you will find that water based products are hard to apply and will leave a lot of brush marks if you are not carefull.  These preservatives are best just for rough sawn fencing panels and not for outdoor buildings.

Spirit Based Preservatives:
These are certainly the best preservatives to use on your garden shed, greenhouse, summerhouse etc.  We recommend using the Cuprinol Shed & Fencing Preserver or and in that range.  Follow the link http://www.cuprinol.co.uk/products/shed_and_fence_preserv_overview.jsp
You will find that this preservative soaks into the timber and is very quick and easy to apply.

Paints & Opaque Paints:
These are good, however you need to make sure you have a good undercoat on before any paint is used.  It will take 2 or 3 coats so be prepared to spend time doing this, although the end product looks excellent.  We suggest using the Cuprinol Heritage Garden Shades  Follow the link; http://www.cuprinol.co.uk/products/heritage_garden_shades_overview.jsp
